Hero (2015): Review

Director: Nikhil Advani | Writers: Nikhil Advani, Umesh Bist

Cast: Athiya Shetty, Sooraj Pancholi, Aditya Pancholi

Inspiration: Remake of the 1983 blockbuster- Hero

Verdict – That awkward moment when the only thing hot in the film is Aditya Pancholi, who by the way is not the lead actor.

In 1983, Subhash Ghai created history with his magnum opus Hero, starring Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri which went on to become a cult film for years to follow. In possibly what happens to be the fifth remake of the blockbuster, Salman Khan introduces star kids Athiya Shetty and Sooraj Pancholi reprising the lead roles.

Sooraj Kaushik (Sooraj Pancholi), a street gangster but a good man at heart kidnaps Radha (Athiya Shetty) to save his Baba aka Pasha (Aditya Pancholi) who is accused of murder in a case handled by IG Shrikant (Tigmanshu Dhulia), Radha’s father. To pressurize the IG, Sooraj kidnaps Radha, who is unaware of her abduction, complies with her ‘caring kidnappers’ till the end and falls in love with Sooraj.

Sooraj surrenders to win Radha and become a good man, but earns many enemies, including his own Baba. Can Sooraj and Radha have a happy ending?

The first half of the film is majorly similar to Imtiaz Ali’s last release, Highway. The second half a replica of the film comes with even more abrupt surprises. To be honest, every 2 minutes, I kept going ‘WTF’ trying to digest the chaotic tale. Sooraj and Athiya fail to deliver not just a power packed performance, but any impact at all. With performers like Tigmanshu Dhulia, Aditya Pancholi and even Sharad Kelkar, the newbies are well overshadowed with little screen presence adding to the damage further.

The locales are pretty, the songs are decent, and the cinematography goes well…

But you don’t expect a director of Nikhil Adavni’s repute to crassly copy the action sequences from the likes of the Jason Statham’s Transporter series. The film was ill conceived, boring and gave you many instances to question it’s juvenile attitude. There was little that went well to create a lasting impression of the debutantes.

In fact there are dialogues that make you wonder what just happened! Like really!

I wonder if there is more conflict in the story in the sense of writing and story telling.

The real hero of the film emerges in the end to sing, ‘Main hoon hero tera…’ (Probably to remind us that he is playing Godfather to these two Bollywood newbies).

You can happily skip this film and watch good old Jackie Shroff romance!
